I couldn't help but agree more with his analysis of the problem which he provided in a heated debate discussing progress towards the U.N.'s Millenium Development Goals in Geneva last month. The first of these goals is to halve the number of people living in poverty and hunger by 2015 but, what a surprise, things aren't going too well. The excesses of the rich, subsidised north were again brought to light: the world produced enough food to feed 12 billion people last year (twice the world's population) but 854 million people still go hungry every day.
I urge those concerned to particpate in a new campaign recently launched by ActionAid, HungerFREE.

In free system food would just be produced for those who could afford it, how would that help poverty sticken regionsof Africa, which are the regions that tend not to be able to produce, nd would not have surplus to be given from Europe.

Let's be clear here anonymous...this blog is campaining for the eradication of CAP. There is clearly a need to subsidise the development of agriculture in developing countries just as there is a need to continue funding development in general with overseas aid. However, there comes a point in time (as is the case in Western Europe) when subsidies do much more harm than good. Just look at all the evidence! This money is not going to small-scale farmers but massive multinational companies . Surpluses are then being dumped in developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America which destroys the opportunities for local agriculture to develop.
